How old is Wesley Preschool?
Wesley was first established as a kindergarten in the 1950’s. When Fairfax County began to offer Kindergarten as part of the public school system in the following decade, Wesley transitioned into a preschool for students ages 2 to 5. We now offer classes for ages 2.5 to 5 years of age.
How many children are enrolled in Wesley Preschool?
Wesley Preschool offers classes that range from 10 students maximum in our 2.5-year-old class to 16 students maximum in our PreK classes. We offer many class options with 2, 3, 4 and 5 day schedules.
What special classes will my child attend?
Students attend music/movement class weekly and Chapel with the Pastor of Wesley monthly.
Does Wesley provide a snack?
Wesley provides a nutritious nut free snack daily. Children with medication at school for food allergies are required to provide their own snack. Wesley aims to be a nut free environment.
What are some extra programs Wesley offers?
Students may stay from 12pm-1pm for Lunch Bunch. Additional enrichment programs such as Yoga and Young Scholars are offered to certain age groups. Past Young Scholars curriculum have included such topics as math, science, art, book club, literacy and geography.
Does Wesley provide a lunch?
Wesley does not provide a lunch during the regular school day. Students participating in after school enrichment programs will bring their own nut free lunch from home.
Does the preschool offer field trips?
In-House field trips (programs presented at school) are scheduled throughout the year. They may include storytellers, nature presentations, musicians and community helpers. All field trips are planned to supplement classroom activities and lesson plans.
What type of clothing should my child wear to school?
Since classes at preschool involve painting, lively activities and floor play, clothing should be durable, casual, and washable. Belts and difficult clothing should be avoided for ease of restroom use. Students should also have proper clothing for outdoor play each day. Rubber
soled shoes with closed toes are best for the playground along with heavy coats, hats and gloves for winter outdoor play.
How does drop off and pick up work?
Parents/caregivers walk their preschooler to the classroom/playground each morning. In the afternoons, parents/caregivers pick up their preschooler from either the classroom/playground. We have designated parking areas for parents/caregivers in our parking lot.
Is transportation provided?
No, transportation to and from school is the responsibility of the parent or caregiver.
What is Wesley’s philosophy on discipline?
We embrace the tenets of Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline®. Conscious Discipline is a comprehensive classroom management program and social-emotional curriculum. It is based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices. She has a useful website and has authored many books including Conscious Discipline, I Love You Rituals and Emotional Mayhem.
How is communication with the teacher handled?
Teachers send an electronic newsletter each week which details classroom activities, special programs, and upcoming events and reminders. A written assessment of a child’s progress is provided during the parent/teacher conference held at the mid-year mark. At any time during the school year, a parent may request a meeting with the teacher.
Are parents/caregivers able to participate in classroom activities?
Absolutely! The teacher will be happy to explain the many opportunities for your assistance. You may help behind the scenes by preparing materials, collecting supplies, or collecting book orders. There may also be opportunities to help in the classroom during special events. There is also a room parent role for each class.
Is there a Parent Committee and what is the role?
Wesley has an active parent committee which serves many roles. The parent committee, Wesley Weekday Parent Committee (WWPC), plans fun parent and family socials, organizes fundraising events, and supports the Wesley Staff. The WWPC encourages fellowship with our Wesley community.
